On June 16, makesense Philippines announced the launch of ‘Re_action’ an online volunteer program to enable people to collectively find ways to provide basic services for vulnerable communities in a post-COVID world. The program is part of a global community response that started in makesense France. The program continues to scale in other countries in the US, the UK, Peru, and more.

The re_action program will guide volunteers to make an immediate impact, all from home. Makesense will group volunteers with 10-16 people, providing them with the tools to assess their community needs and propose concrete ideas to help. By week one, they will be accompanied by a makesense coordinator, who will help them support makesense’s network of NGOs.

Through everyday acts of compassion – be it finding transportation for front liners or even reaching out to people who need mental health support – volunteers can make a real difference, all from their sofa. Volunteers will help co-design solutions on water access, electricity and energy, hygiene and sanitation, healthcare, and housing – fundamental issues that need to be addressed as inequality rises and the Philippine economy takes a downturn.

Once volunteers are able to scale their efforts, they can opt into community coordinator training and learn how to coach an incoming team, sparking accelerated change!

In only the first week, the first wave of 40 volunteers were able to supply 150 families with clean water for 1 month, provide 200 cancer patients with transportation to their checkups, supply 20 PWD families with 2 weeks’ worth of healthy meals, and feed 450 families with 40kg of fresh produce. All of this they managed online.

Makesense believes that collective action and collaboration is the way we can care for each other best during this crisis. Re_action accepts applicants on a rolling basis.
